To Fic or Not to Fic?

Looks more like not for me. There has just been so much crap going on these past months (which I won't divest here) that I just can't find the inspiration to write much of anything. So some things I have to turn loose.

Sky/Z for [info]30_kisses is one. I just submitted the drop request. It currently stands at 9 completed ficlets, and unfortunately that's where it'll stay. If anyone on the flist is inclined to write Sky/Z for this challenge, go for it I say!

I do have completed parts for the [info]pr_au100 storylines I posted, those will be finished at some point, but I won't be adding any additional 'universes'. This also means I won't be writing the full 100 prompt goals. It was a nice idea while it lasted.

Various things posted on FF.net. Probably not going anywhere anytime soon. Honestly, I'm not even sure what I have over there any more.

[info]pyramid_dares and the Bridge story is something I'd like to complete at some point. Just not sure when that will happen.

The B5/SPD crossover. That's what I'm going to attempt to focus on in the hopes I'll be able to fire my writing back up. We'll see how that plan goes.

In the coming next two weeks, I'll be kiddie free. Hopefully that will not only give me brackets of uninterrupted time but also bring down my stress levels. I think that's mainly why I have been unable to write. We'll see how that theory works out as well.

Wish I had better things to share with you all, but that's how it goes sometimes. *sigh*

To Warn or Not to Warn

I've seen this discussion pop up elsewhere, but I'd like to know y'alls thoughts on this as well.

Character death; warning required?

Seems to have sparked quite a discussion.

I'm on the side of not warning. Especially if it spoils the whole fic. Any suspension or buildup is lost by warning for it. Take for example a certain Stargate Atlantis episode. Totally killed the episode for me since nobody in fandom could shut up about it. I really would have preferred not to know.

So what are your thoughts?

Current count...

Well, I did my typing of fic. I didn't quite make it to the end of the notebook as my eyeballs were ready to protest staring at iddy biddy words in chicken scratch. Boy, I have atrocious handwriting sometimes. *snerk*

There is still a bit of randomness to go through, but otherwise the massive brunt of the backlog is typed up.

The tally sheet:

Nine fics
6,009 words total
5 PRSPD
1 SPD/B5 chapter (whoo!)
3 A-Team (hey; where'd those come from ;)

Fics ready for posting:
Zero!

Outside of a double drabble, everything is still very much rough draft. (I bounced at the word count of 209 and thought that for *once* I could do an actual drabble. Okay, double drabble. Blah. So picky :) Especially the last couple of ones I typed I up. I made so many typos it was getting ridiculous. And we all know spell check is only going to catch but so much.

So now, a bit of chill time and then eventually bed. Yes I'm up at 2am, what of it. :P

I can have fic?

murdock hat & heart
Now that the worky bit is done, I've got some stuff hanging out in the notebook(s) that I'm planning to type up.

Hopefully it'll kick the muse's butt awake. *grumbles*

The one thing I noticed about my side job is that editing is really *not* conducive to writing. Especially with certain stories. Good Lord. It boggles me that this/these were submitted for eventual publication. I've seen better grammar skills in fanfic. Not to be dissin' fanfics, mind you. Just saying that one would think a 'professional author', one who has published before, would have more skill than that. At least I feel like I'm earning my pay. ;p

After spending days slogging through such stuff, it leaves me with no desire to want to do anything remotely associated with stories. Either reading or writing it. (hello tv veg time!) But now that they're sent off to my boss, hopefully I can do something worthwhile fic wise. I've been meaning to get this backlog typed up anyway...

Fanfic; plageristic or not?

[info]icarusancalion has done a very good write-up on the difference between plagiarism and fanfic.

Fanfic can sometimes walk a very narrow tightrope, that question 'can fanfic be considered as original works or is it just copyright rip-offs?' becomes even more obscured when people plagerize. Whether it's a well-known published work or someone else's fanfic.

Go read Icarus's little ok; not so little essay.
spd team
Fanfic writers everywhere (or it seems like everywhere, at least on my flist) are all doing that 'fanfic/writing meme'. So of course, I just *had* to do it too.

1. How about a brief introduction?
LttleDvl is my pen name. It also happens to be my internet nick/screen/username for just about every website/forum/chat/im that I’ve ever been to. (hey; I’m nothing if not consistent ;)

Chances are if you’ve ever seen LttleDvl anywhere on a fic, no matter the archive/webpage, it’ll be me.
And now; the rest of the story... )

Journal Call For Papers
From the Journal Committee:

Transformative Works and Cultures (TWC) is a new international peer-reviewed journal published by the Organization for Transformative Works edited by Kristina Busse and Karen Hellekson. TWC publishes articles about popular media, fan communities, and transformative works, broadly conceived.

We invite papers on all related topics, including but not limited to fan fiction, fan vids, mashups, machinima, film, TV, anime, comic books, video games, and any and all aspects of the communities of practice that surround them. TWC’s aim is twofold: to provide a publishing outlet that welcomes fan-related topics, and to promote dialogue between the academic community and the fan community. You may find more information on the call for papers here.

Submissions can be made through TWC’s Web site; inquiries may be made to the editors (editor @ transformativeworks.org).

Just thought I'd pass this along for those of you who may be interested in this sort of thing. Especially since a lot of you on my flist are fanficcers, graphics makers and vidders.

A lot of what this group is doing is trying to present a case and ease the restrictions in regards to where copyright infringement is being used to squash creative endeavors. And you know how that goes. I'm convinced that if a lot of the great artists, et al. lived in our world today, they'd probably be getting their asses sued off. Copyright infringement is becoming ridiculous in my opinion. Less of a protective measure, like it should be, and more of an oppression tool by narrow-minded windbags. /end mini-rant

Feel free to pass this along!
(Yes, I posted this to main lj too. Just making sure I hit all those who might be interested. :)

So, I know some of y'all talk about how many/kind of stories you have sitting around that are unfinished. I know I have a chunk too. And I was curious so...

1 crossover fic
6 parts for some prau100
a Bridge/Z
1 about Jack
another SPD AU (which I may or may not do anything with)
a halloween SPD
Drunken B-Squad (which turned more emo than crackish)
NaNo
Bridge after his return from PROO
1 SGA
1 bit for the Bridge pyramid dares stuff
a new SPD ranger team
that virus one I mentioned several months ago
baby B-Squad
short Bridge/Sky
something SWATish

All total that makes *does a quick count* 21. Geesh. *facepalm* Of course some of these will likely never see the light of day. And this totally doesn't include anything written in the notebook. Which is damn near full at this point - largely things I've already posted though.

I dare you to say that three times fast! Lol!

So yah, NaNo...how are folks doin' with that? I'm at least caught up through day 6, so I'll be writing for day 7 tonight. I started the week out slightly ahead of myself, but fell behind since I didn't get a lick of writing done last night. But work turned out to be a bit slow (really slow) and so I spent a bit of time working on my story (Shh! Don't tell my boss!) ;p

I am now back up to my personal goal - which is min of 1667 words per day. That would put one at slightly over the 50,000 word goal at the end of the month. It sounds like I'm being lazy (doing only the min) but I think of it as not how much I need to write, but how little. I'm actually hoping to clear 50K by a bit, but I'm using the 1667/day to keep my butt focused on writing on a daily basis.

At any rate, my story is ... hrm, how shall I say it? Discombulated. That sounds good. I don't really have a 'story', but rather segments of a story. My muse is behaving only somewhat, and while she's giving me material for the story, she's not giving it to me in any particular order. And certainly not in logical order.

I have scene skips. Parts that jump from the beginning to the story to somewhere in the middle. I even have one part that contradicts another! *headdesk*

The muse pulled a doozie on that one! I wrote a segment and what was supposed to be a brief mention of an event that happened some time in the past, it suddenly became a whole scene in and of itself that I just *had* to write out in its entirity. What should have been a very, very, very minor character mention (oh gee, we feel sorry for that one and let's move on and look at something else) has now firmly stepped up to being a major character. The muse is now laughing her ass off at me, daring me to try to kill this character off now. (I'm not even going to try to fight that battle, the muse has already won.)

So at some point, I'm going to have a batch of re-writing to do. *facepalm* But that's what December is for. How's everyone else's story going?

and if you're curious, the current word count is at 10,139. Whee!

So, a little discussion that started over at [info]icarusancalion's really makes me want to spork my eyeballs out now...

Apparently, Ms. Mercedes Lackey (author of numerous fantasy novels of which I am fan) appears to only semi-support fanfiction.

What do I mean by semi-support?

Tis simple; if you want to write fanfic based on her writings all you gotta do is get it published in one of the approved fanzines (which of course can only happen after you submit a release form), it cannot be online (as seen on her webpage: "We don't allow online fanfiction or online games, MUDs, MUCKs or MUSHs; anything else is fine."), oh, and it is also highly recommended that if you want to continue in your silly pursuit of fanficcing Ms. Lackey's world(s) that you jump through several flaming hoops, sacrifice your first born child and teach your dog to juggle.

And here I thought I was gonna be able to do a nice little crossover for au100 between the SPD crew and her stuff. *scraps that idea*

Yes, yes, it is her creation after all, but damn...

50%? 50 stinking percent of any possible proceeds you might make from your published work?? 50%??? gee, now I just wanna dig my brain out with a spoon... 50%??????? (yes, I did read said release form O_o)

I took a little quiz, the Morphin Grid Selector aka, what Power Ranger would you be?

The result was intersting...

Green Ranger, here I come! )

Kind of nifty...

In other news - I signed up for NaNoWriMo. Can I write 50,000 words in one month's time? Guess we'll find out.

(why do I always get sucked into these things? Oh! I know; I'm a glutton for personal punishment! *headdesk*)

When it comes to reading a fic, do you prefer first person or third? Present tense or past? Why or why not?

No; I'm not asking for some silly quiz or anything like that, I'm asking because I really want to know.

I'm toying with the idea of writing a fic in first person but wanted to get a feel from you guys if you think it'll work or not.

Let me know!

Toasty!

So here is the 'alternate toaster' verison of the fic I posted at [info]30_kisses. (Good grief, I have alternates now - maybe I should have a special 'director's cut' like they do for DVDs? *is crazy*)

more toasty madness )

In my research *snickers at the idea of researching toasters and toast* I found some odd and whacked toasty websites:

http://www.toaster.org/
http://www.drtoast.com/departments/toast-haiku/
http://www.afn.org/~kalirush/cntng.html

Did you know that the electrical tone emitted by toasters is 480 khz? Of course you did!

Some of those poems...sounds like a certain Green Ranger could've written them! Hahahahaha!

And...though it didn't get as much attention in the story, there was a bit of digging done for the computer. I settled on the Dell XPSDT 720 H2C. Yes, boys and girls, it's a real computer. For a measley $5,999 bucks ::coughsputter:: you too can have every gaming nerd's dream machine. Eat your heart out, [info]itsbuttery.

Fic Memes

Top ten ways to tell you are reading a fic by LttleDvl

1. It takes forever for a new chapter to appear.
2. It’s probably loaded with angst.
3. Bridge is the most prominent character.
4. There’s a cliffhanger ending.
5. It’s beyond smut – it’s porn!
6. The title is either a phrase or it’s one word only.
7. Someone at some point is going to say the word ‘shit’.
8. A ‘drabble’ usually isn’t.
9. There’s a good chance one of the characters will suffer an injury.
10. Kissing!

The rest I'm cutting because this ain't gonna be no short post...
